The Hospitals of Sutherland

Sutherland is one of Scotland’s least crowded counties.  Our book looks at the development of Migdale Hospital.  It was originally the Sutherland Combination Poorhouse and was then renamed Swordale.  It was refurbished and renamed Migdale about 70 years ago and finally moved into a new building in 2011.

We also examine the history of the Lawson Memorial Hospital - founded by George Lawson in memory of his family and well-funded from the outset as a general hospital.

Both these hospitals are still with us but the Pope Hospital in Helmsdale had a more chequered history.  It had a false start in the 1930s and when it resumed as a maternity hospital around 1950 it lasted less than 25 years.

Like our other recent books we have had our printing costs sponsored - in this case by NHS Highland Endowments to whom we are most grateful.  Since these make up the bulk of our costs, we are therefore only charging for postage and packing.
